The homepage of a typical metal shop looks like this: a slider with three photos of machines, the words “Welcome to our website”, a paragraph about quality and tradition since 1994, and a news section whose last entry is a trade fair from two years ago.
Then an engineer arrives. She found you in a directory, or a colleague mentioned your name, or she clicked from LinkedIn. She has a drawing on her desk and a deadline. And she decides, in a few seconds, whether this homepage is worth a scroll.
Onsite conversion starts with understanding who that visitor is and what she needs from you, right then. Nobody has the patience to search your site for the answer. If the homepage does not give it, she leaves and gives the next supplier a chance.
So what does a manufacturer’s homepage have to do?

Traffic Is Not Everything
Visitor counts are like airport layovers in a tourism board’s statistics. Three hundred thousand “visitors” sounds impressive until you learn that most of them saw the arrivals lobby and boarded the next plane.
Your homepage traffic works the same way. A thousand visitors a month means nothing if none of them clicks through to a process page or uploads a drawing.
Traffic and conversion are different things. Visitors are people passing through on their way to information; RFQs come only from the ones who found it.
For a manufacturer, the numbers that matter on the homepage are not pageviews. They are the share of visitors who click through to a service page, the number who start the RFQ form or click the phone number, and, eventually, the quotes that came from those visits.
What the Homepage Has to Answer in Five Seconds
Engineers and purchasing managers come to your homepage with the same four questions, and they want the answers without scrolling:
- What do you make? The processes: laser cutting, bending, CNC machining, welding, steel structures, powder coating.
- For whom, and where? The industries and the regions or countries you deliver to.
- How well? Capacities, certifications, batch sizes, lead times.
- What do I do next? Send a drawing, see a capability, call someone.
The answer to the first three is your value proposition, and it belongs in one sentence at the top of the page. Compare:
- “Welcome to our website. We are your reliable partner for innovative metal solutions.”
- “Laser cutting, bending and welding of steel and stainless parts for machine builders across DACH. ISO 9001 and EN 1090. Quote within 24 hours.”
The second one tells the engineer she is in the right place before she has read anything else. The homepage call to action is then an extension of that sentence: “Send your drawing” and “See our capabilities”, side by side.
If a visitor cannot work out what you make and click somewhere useful within a few seconds, the rest of the page does not get a chance.
The Anatomy of a Manufacturer’s Homepage
Here is the structure we use for manufacturing websites, section by section, from the top.
1. Hero: One Sentence, One Real Photo, Two Buttons
The value proposition from above, a subline with the three or four facts that matter most (materials, thicknesses, batch sizes, region), and two buttons: the primary one to the RFQ form, the secondary one to the processes.
Behind it, one photo of your actual shop floor or a part you are proud of. Not a slider: sliders rotate past the message before anyone reads it, and they slow the page down. Not a stock photo of a welder with a perfectly clean helmet: every engineer recognises it, and it says you have nothing real to show.
2. Processes: One Card per Service, With a Number
Directly under the hero, a card for each process, each linking to its service page. Every card gets one line of specification, not a slogan:
- Laser cutting: steel up to 25 mm, stainless up to 15 mm, 3000 × 1500 mm
- CNC machining: 3- and 5-axis milling, parts up to 1000 × 800 × 600 mm
- Welding: MIG/MAG and TIG, ISO 3834-2, steel and stainless
- Powder coating: parts up to 7 m, all RAL colours
This section does the single most important job on the homepage: it produces the first click into the site. More on why that click matters below.
3. Proof: Certifications, Customers, Numbers
A band with the certifications you hold (ISO 9001, EN 1090, ISO 3834, IATF 16949), each linked to the certificate; the logos of customers you may name, or the industries you serve if you may not; and three or four facts: years in business, parts per month, on-time delivery rate, countries delivered to.
This is where the purchasing manager decides whether to keep reading. She is vetting a supplier, and the homepage has to pass the vetting.
4. Industries and Reference Projects
Cards for the industries you serve, linking to industry pages, followed by two or three reference projects with a real photo and the numbers: part, material, batch size, tolerance, lead time. A photo gallery labelled “References” with no text does not count; buyers cannot tell what they are looking at.
5. Machine Park, Briefly
Engineers love machine lists, so give them a summary, with the key specifications, and a link to the full page. The full list belongs on its own page, linked from every process page as well.
6. How We Work, and Who Answers
Three steps: send the drawing, receive a quote within 24 hours (or whatever you can keep), production and delivery. Next to it, a named contact person with a photo, a phone number and an email address. Buyers want to know who picks up the phone, and a name converts better than “info@”.
7. Technical Articles, Not News
If you publish technical content, show the latest two or three guides here: laser cutting tolerances, design rules for bent parts, how to prepare a DXF. They show expertise and give the engineer a reason to come back. The company news (the summer party, the new forklift) does not belong on the homepage, and mostly not on the site.
8. Footer: Everything a Buyer Needs to Vet You
Full address, phone, email, company registration and VAT number, certifications again, the languages you work in, and links to the process pages. Purchasing departments run supplier checks, and a footer that answers their questions saves them an email.
Understanding Bounce Rate on a Manufacturing Homepage
When a visitor leaves without a second click, she becomes part of the bounce rate, or, in today’s analytics, one of the “unengaged” sessions. She did not find the site relevant, or could not see where to go, or the page took too long to load on her phone.
Some people treat this number as a matter of pride. For a homepage it is the bread and butter: the clearest signal that something on the page has to change.
Be careful with benchmarks, though. A manufacturer’s homepage gets a lot of visitors who typed the company name to find a phone number or an address, and they leave satisfied after one page. Rather than the overall bounce rate, track the actions that matter:
- clicks from the homepage to process pages,
- RFQ form starts and completions,
- clicks on the phone number and email address,
- and how many of those turn into quotes.
If those are low, the fixes are almost always the same: put the processes in the main navigation and a “Request a quote” button in the header, state the capabilities in numbers, remove the pop-ups, replace the slider with one photo, and make the page fast on mobile.
On pop-ups: a newsletter pop-up on a B2B manufacturing site drives away far more engineers than it ever converts. The same goes for chat widgets that greet the visitor before she has read the headline. If in doubt, measure; if you cannot measure, remove.
The First Click Is the Conversion That Matters
Your main goal is the RFQ, but a smaller “yes” comes first. Marketers call it a micro-conversion; on a homepage it is even smaller than that: the visitor navigating from the homepage deeper into the site, where the conversion path actually lives.
For a job shop, that path is homepage, then process page, then capability page or RFQ form. The homepage’s only real job is to make that first click obvious and quick: process cards near the top, specifications on the cards, and a quote button in the header on every screen size.
The Homepage as a Stepping Stone
Many buyers never land on the homepage first. They arrive on a capability page from a search for “laser cutting stainless steel”, or on a technical article. But before they send an RFQ, most of them click the logo and look at the homepage anyway.
They are checking that you are real: a real company, real machines, real people, a real address. The homepage has become the credibility check, and it has to confirm what the deeper page promised.
Which leads to the order of work. Fix the deeper pages first, the service and capability pages where the RFQs actually happen, and then the homepage that feeds and confirms them. A beautiful homepage on top of empty service pages converts nobody; a plain homepage that sends engineers to excellent capability pages converts very well. The true metric of a website is not how many visitors it had, but how many of them it helped and how many became customers. For a manufacturer, that means one thing: how many drawings arrived because of what the site said.
