On-page SEO for a manufacturing website looks the same as on-page SEO for any other site: title tags, headings, keywords, internal links.
That is exactly why so many metal shops get it wrong. They copy tactics written for online shops, blogs and software companies, and end up with a homepage that says “quality, flexibility and 30 years of experience” and ranks for nothing.
Purchasing managers and engineers at OEMs search differently. They search by process, material, tolerance, certification and location, and they want specifications, not slogans.
In this guide we explain what makes on-page SEO different for manufacturers and walk through nine tactics, with examples from CNC machining, laser cutting, welding, steel structures and powder coating, that turn those searches into RFQs.

What Is On-Page SEO and Why Does It Matter for Manufacturers?
On-page SEO is the practice of optimising the content of individual web pages so that they rank for a set of target keywords and give the visitor what they came for.
It covers everything that lives on the page: text, headings, images and their alt text, page titles, meta descriptions, internal links, tables, forms and calls to action.
It is different from off-page SEO, which covers backlinks, directory listings and other signals coming from third-party websites, and from technical SEO, which deals with speed, crawlability and site structure. Here is how the three fit together:

Is on-page optimisation still important? Yes.
Google’s algorithms use hundreds of factors to rank pages, but well-optimised content remains one of the strongest, alongside backlinks. Using the right keywords in your page titles and content tells both Google and your buyer exactly what the page is about, which is why most pages ranking on Google’s first page contain their target keyword in the title.

For a manufacturer, the business case is simple.
A click on “CNC machining services” in Germany costs advertisers roughly €5 in Google Ads, and the traffic stops the day you pause the campaign. A well-optimised service page brings the same engineers to your site month after month at no extra cost, and the large majority of first-page clicks go to organic results, not ads.
On-demand manufacturing platforms such as Protolabs and Xometry built much of their organic reach exactly this way: design guides, material pages and process pages optimised for what engineers search for. A 40-person job shop cannot match their budgets, but it can apply the same on-page principles to its own capabilities, for the region and the industries it actually serves.
Here is how.
9 On-Page SEO Tactics for Manufacturing Websites
The core idea behind on-page SEO is to create pages that give searchers the content they are looking for, in a format they can use. For a manufacturing website, that means pages an engineer can qualify you from in two minutes and a purchasing manager can forward to a colleague.
The following nine tactics will get you there.
Tactic #1: Start With Manufacturing-Specific Keyword Research
Keyword research is the foundation of on-page SEO. It means identifying the terms engineers and buyers type into Google to find the processes, materials and capacities you offer.
The ideal keyword balances three things:

The biggest challenge for manufacturers is low search volume. A metal shop’s core services are niche, so the numbers look small next to consumer keywords.
They are still worth having. In Germany, “CNC Fräsen” (CNC milling) is searched around 800 times a month and “Lohnfertigung” (contract manufacturing) around 700, while a broad head term like “Pulverbeschichtung” (powder coating) reaches 9,700 searches but is mostly informational.
The solution is to work with two keyword groups:
- Informational keywords for technical guides: “laser cutting tolerances”, “sheet metal design guidelines”, “powder coating vs galvanizing”. Higher volume, engineers in research mode.
- RFQ keywords for service and capability pages: “laser cutting service Bavaria”, “EN 1090 steel fabricator”, “small batch CNC turning stainless steel”. Low volume, buyers ready to send drawings.
The free sources are Google Autocomplete, the “People also ask” box, related searches, the category pages of industrial directories such as Europages and wlw, and your competitors’ sites in Ahrefs or Semrush. Aim for 10–15 informational topics and 20–30 RFQ keywords before you touch a single page.

Tactic #2: Optimise Titles, URLs and Meta Descriptions
Once you have your target keywords, put them where Google looks first: the page title, the URL, the H1 heading and the meta description.
For a manufacturing service page, a title tag that works follows a simple pattern: process + material or capability + location or certification + brand name.

- Laser Cutting Steel up to 25 mm | Fibre Laser 3000 × 1500 mm | [Company]
- EN 1090 EXC3 Steel Structure Fabrication | [Company]
- Powder Coating for Large Parts up to 7 m | [Company]
Compare that with what most metal shop titles look like: “Home”, “Services”, “About us”. They tell Google nothing and the buyer even less.
The URL should be short and descriptive: /laser-cutting/ or /cnc-machining/stainless-steel/, not /services/page-2/. The H1 on the page should contain the keyword; on WordPress, the page title is the H1 by default.
The meta description does not need the keyword to rank, but it decides whether the buyer clicks. Use it to give the three facts a buyer needs: what you make, to what specification, and what to do next. For example: “Laser cutting of steel, stainless and aluminium up to 25 mm on a 6 kW fibre laser. Batch sizes from 1 to 10,000. ISO 9001 certified. Send your DXF and get a quote within 24 hours.”
If your site runs on WordPress, an SEO plugin such as Rank Math or Yoast lets you set the title and meta description of every page directly in the editor.
Tactic #3: Optimise the Body Content for Primary and Related Keywords
This is the core of on-page SEO: using your target keyword and its natural variations in the content itself.
Use the keyword naturally. Keyword density is an outdated concept, and a page that repeats “CNC machining” twenty times reads like spam to an engineer and to Google alike.
As a rule, use your primary keyword:
- at least once in the first 100 words,
- in the page title and H1 heading,
- in at least one H2 or H3 subheading.
Then cover the related terms Google expects to see on a page about your topic. For a laser cutting page, that means fibre laser, sheet thickness, kerf, tolerances, DXF and DWG files, nesting, materials, bending and deburring. These related terms help Google understand the page precisely and let it rank for dozens of long-tail searches at once.

Do the same with your images. A photo of a part with the alt text “laser cut S355 brackets, 10 mm, powder coated RAL 7016” ranks in image search and reinforces the page topic. “IMG_2041.jpg” does neither.
Writing this way is easier than it sounds. If you know your process and write for the engineer reading the page, with specifications, limits and examples, you will use the relevant terms naturally. Then review the page from an SEO perspective and add what is missing, without hurting readability.
Tactic #4: Make the Site Work on Mobile (and Load Fast)
Worldwide, more than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices.

Manufacturing websites skew more towards desktop, because engineers work from a workstation. But purchasing managers check suppliers from a phone between meetings, and Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your site fails on mobile, it fails in the rankings too.

Manufacturing sites have a specific problem here: dozens of large part photos, machine videos and PDF brochures. Compress images, serve them in modern formats, and keep the RFQ form usable on a phone. Test every key page with Google’s PageSpeed Insights and fix what it flags.
Tactic #5: Build Content-Rich Service and Capability Pages
Most manufacturer homepages have a slider, three icons and a paragraph about quality and tradition. That is fine as a first impression, but if that is all the content, you have a problem.
The more relevant content a page has, the better it covers a topic, and the more relevant traffic it attracts.
Alongside the conversion copy above the fold, your homepage needs substantive content that describes what you make, using your target keywords: processes, materials, industries, certifications, machine park, capacities and the regions you serve.
Your service pages matter even more. Many metal shops describe all their processes on a single “Services” page. Describe each process briefly there, yes, but create a dedicated page for every main service (laser cutting, bending, CNC milling, welding, powder coating), each optimised for its own keyword and containing:
- a machine list with specifications (for example a 6 kW fibre laser with a 3000 × 1500 mm bed, or a 5-axis machining centre with 1000 × 800 × 600 mm travel),
- materials and thickness ranges,
- achievable tolerances and surface finishes,
- batch sizes, lead times and the file formats you accept,
- the certifications relevant to that process (ISO 9001, EN 1090, ISO 3834, IATF 16949),
- photos of real parts and reference projects,
- an FAQ and an RFQ form with drawing upload.
A service page built this way easily reaches 800–1,500 words of useful content, which is why it ranks, while a 150-word page with a stock photo does not.
Then go one level deeper with capability pages: “laser cutting stainless steel”, “tube laser cutting”, “CNC machining aluminium”, “powder coating large parts”. Each targets a specific RFQ keyword from Tactic #1 and links back to its parent service page. This is the structure we build when we set up digital marketing for CNC machining companies.
Tactic #6: Publish Long-Form Technical Guides
Service pages capture buyers who already know what they need. To reach engineers earlier, while they are still working out how to make a part, you need technical content.
B2B buyers do most of their research before they contact a supplier. Gartner’s research on B2B buying found that buyers spend only around 17% of the purchase process meeting potential suppliers; the rest is independent research, much of it on Google.

Long-form guides let you target more keywords, attract backlinks from industry portals and technical universities, and put your name in front of engineers months before an RFQ exists. Marketers across industries still rank content among their most important channels:

For a manufacturer, the topics write themselves: design guidelines for laser-cut parts, tolerance tables, material selection (S235 vs S355, 1.4301 vs 1.4404), what drives the cost of a machined part, how to prepare a DXF for laser cutting, powder coating vs galvanizing.
How long should a guide be?
Anything beyond 1,500–2,000 words is generally considered long-form.
The right length is decided by the search results. Analyse the top ten pages for your keyword, note their depth, and create something more complete and more specific, with real photos, tables and numbers from your own production.

Tactic #7: Optimise for Comparison, Alternative and “Best” Keywords
Three keyword types deserve their own pages on a manufacturing website:
- Comparisons (“vs”)
- Alternatives
- “Best” lists
Engineers compare processes and materials before they choose a supplier: “laser cutting vs plasma cutting”, “laser vs waterjet”, “powder coating vs galvanizing”, “MIG vs TIG welding”, “aluminium vs stainless steel enclosure”. These keywords have little competition, and a page that explains honestly when each option makes sense, and links to your service page for the one you offer, captures buyers in the consideration stage.
Alternative keywords work differently in manufacturing than in software. Buyers search for alternatives to on-demand platforms (“Xometry alternative Europe”) and, increasingly, for European alternatives to Asian suppliers as they nearshore production. A page that explains why a certified job shop in your region is the better option for series production, with lead time, logistics and quality arguments, targets exactly those searches.
“Best” keywords (“best laser cutting companies in Germany”, “best CNC machining suppliers in Europe”) are usually won by list posts, not homepages. Search for the keyword and look at what ranks before you decide what to build.
If the top results are list posts, do two things. Optimise your service page for the core term, and publish a genuinely useful article on how to choose a laser cutting supplier, with the selection criteria that favour you (certifications, capacity, engineering support, communication), and with your company described first and in the most detail.
Make the article the best resource on the topic, but list your company at the top and describe it in the most detail.
This is one of the lower-hanging fruits of manufacturing on-page SEO, and almost no metal shop does it.
Tactic #8: Optimise for Featured Snippets and AI Answers
The featured snippet, also called position zero, is the short answer Google shows at the top of the results for many questions. It takes around 8% of the clicks on its own, and the same content increasingly feeds Google’s AI overviews and the answers of the AI assistants engineers use for research.

To win it, structure your technical content like this:
- Use question headings (H2/H3) taken from the “People also ask” box: “What tolerance can laser cutting achieve?”, “How thick can a fibre laser cut?”, “How long does powder coating last?”
- Answer each question directly in 40–60 words right under the heading, then go into the details.
- Use tables for specifications: material vs. maximum thickness, tolerance class vs. process, RAL colour vs. lead time.
- Use bullet points and numbered steps for procedures.
- Keep brand names, including yours, out of the direct answer.
This format serves the engineer, who gets the number they need immediately, and it gives Google and AI systems something they can quote.
Tactic #9: Use Internal Links to Connect Guides, Service Pages and Reference Projects
One of the biggest mistakes on manufacturing websites is that the content sits in disconnected silos.
Reference projects live in a “References” gallery with no text. Certifications sit as PDF thumbnails on the “Quality” page. The machine park has its own page that nothing links to. Blog articles, if they exist, link to nothing at all.
Huge mistake.
Use internal links frequently in your guides, service pages and even on the homepage to connect the different sections of your site.
Concretely:
- every technical guide links to the service page for the process it discusses and to the RFQ page,
- every service page links to relevant reference projects, the certifications that apply, and the capability sub-pages beneath it,
- every reference project links back to the services and materials used,
- the machine park page links to each process page, and each process page links back to it.
Internal links help buyers move from a question to a quote, help Google crawl and understand the site, and distribute your site’s authority to the pages that generate RFQs. It is the cheapest SEO win on this list.
