Publishing content on your manufacturing website, but struggling to get Google to notice?
The issue is often structure, not quality. A typical metal shop website has a few service pages, a handful of technical articles and years of news posts, none of which link to each other. Search engines cannot find their way around it, and neither can the engineers you want to reach.
Luckily, there is a content strategy that fixes exactly this: pillar pages and topic clusters.

What Is the Topic Cluster Model?
The topic cluster model is a way of organising the content on your website.
Originally described by HubSpot, it is an SEO technique that links different but related pieces of content together.
Each topic consists of a core pillar page and several pages of cluster content, all of which link to one another. It builds on the fact that search engines reward pages with relevant links pointing to and from them.
Here is what a topic cluster looks like:

For a manufacturer, the natural unit is one cluster per core process: a laser cutting cluster, a CNC machining cluster, a powder coating cluster. Let’s take a closer look at the two building blocks.
Pillar Pages
Pillar pages are the focal point of each topic cluster.
Think of them as the columns in a steel structure: the robust element that holds everything else up. Your pillar pages are the authoritative pieces of content that support your smaller, more focused cluster articles.
A pillar page is a top-level but exhaustive guide to one topic, such as a complete guide to laser cutting: process, materials, thicknesses, tolerances, design rules, finishing, costs and how to order.
It covers the topic in broad terms without going into full depth on every section. Instead, it links to cluster pages that cover each aspect in detail.
For a job shop, the most valuable pillar is usually your service page for the process, expanded into a complete guide. That way the page that ranks for the broad term is also the page with the RFQ form on it.
How Long Is a Pillar Page?
“How long is a piece of string?” is perhaps the honest answer.
More practically, a pillar page is usually the most extensive piece of content on your website, because it gives a broad overview of a whole topic rather than answering one question.
The average first-page result on Google has almost 1,500 words. Pillar pages tend to have much higher word counts than that:

A laser cutting pillar page of 3,000 words is not unusual once it contains a materials table, a thickness table, achievable tolerances, design rules, finishing options, accepted file formats, lead times and an FAQ. That is not padding; it is what an engineer needs to qualify you as a supplier.
Cluster Pages
Cluster pages are add-on pages that go into precise detail about one aspect of the topic.
The pillar page links to them, they link back to the pillar, and they link between each other where relevant.
Cluster pages look much like typical technical blog posts. They are shorter than their pillar page, but they cover their subtopic in depth.
For a laser cutting pillar, the clusters would be articles such as “laser cutting tolerances”, “laser cutting aluminium”, “how to prepare a DXF file for laser cutting”, “laser cutting vs plasma cutting” and “what drives the cost of laser-cut parts”.
The aim is to cover everything an engineer would want to know if they were digging into that subtopic. There is no limit to how many cluster pages a pillar can have; it depends on the process and how many questions your buyers ask about it.
Why Are Pillar Pages Important for a Manufacturing Website?
Pillar pages and topic clusters bring a number of benefits. Here is why a manufacturer should be building them.
1. Internal Links Are Great for SEO
The whole topic cluster model relies on internal linking.
The pillar links out to its clusters where relevant, and they link back. That is exactly the kind of internal linking that matters for SEO.
Internal links help visitors move from one page to the next, and they help search engines understand the structure of your website and identify its most important pages.
The best part? Each of these links is highly relevant. A link from your laser cutting pillar page to an article on laser cutting tolerances tells Google exactly what that article is about. There is no doubt over its relevance.
2. More Internal Links Means More Content
Admittedly, more content is not always a good thing. A small number of excellent technical pages beats a large archive of thin news posts.
Done well, however, pillar pages give you a natural map of precisely targeted content for your buyers.
Covering the overarching topic on the pillar page lets you touch on many themes, each of which can become a cluster page of its own. A pillar page on CNC machining, for example, opens up these additional keywords:
- 5-axis CNC machining
- CNC machining tolerances
- CNC machining aluminium vs steel
- How much does CNC machining cost
- How to reduce CNC machining costs through part design
- CNC machining for prototypes vs series production
Each of these keywords is more specific than the broad term, and therefore reaches people further down the sourcing process.
An engineer searching for those cluster keywords already knows what CNC machining is. They need specific answers, and often a supplier.
3. Pillar Pages Help Eliminate Underperforming Content
Pillar pages also help you clean up poor content.
When you audit your site, you will find pages that no longer drive traffic or engagement: the trade-fair report from 2019, the announcement of a machine you have since replaced, the three-paragraph post about your anniversary.
Removing those pages can feel risky. But if they bring no organic traffic and no value to a buyer, they litter your site with low-quality content that drags down the rest. (One site increased traffic by 104% and content-generated revenue by 64% after it removed low-quality content.)
Pillar pages resurface that underperforming content and give it a job: either merge it into the pillar, or rewrite and republish it as a proper cluster page. Either way, the overall standard of your site improves.
4. You Can Target High-Volume Search Terms
Strong rankings for terms with real search volume are the holy grail of industrial marketing. With pillar pages, you have a much better chance of getting both.
Your pillar page targets the broad term for your process, which usually has the highest search volume in your niche. In Germany, for example, “Laserschneiden” (laser cutting) is searched around 1,000 times a month and “Pulverbeschichtung” (powder coating) around 9,700, according to Ahrefs.
Far more people search for those terms than for something like “laser cutting 20 mm stainless steel”.
The cluster pages are narrowly focused, so they target long-tail terms with smaller volumes but much clearer intent. Together with the pillar page, they add up to serious traffic, and the long-tail pages are the ones that bring RFQs.
5. They’re Good for the Buyer’s Journey
Topic clusters are excellent for the way engineers and buyers actually move through a website. They link all your content on one process together, so it is easy to go from a specific question to the full picture.
An engineer lands on your tolerances article, follows the link to the laser cutting pillar page, checks your materials and machine park, and sends a drawing. Every step of that path is an internal link.
Visitors read more content when they can find it easily, so they visit more pages and spend more time on your site.
Metrics such as time on site and pages per session go up. Those are signals of engagement for Google, and, more importantly, people build trust when they invest time in your content and get real answers from it.
How to Create a Pillar Page for Your Process
Ready to take advantage of pillar pages?
Here is how to use the topic cluster method to earn more organic rankings, build internal links and target the broad terms for your process. These seven tips follow the same principles as our SEO content best practices for manufacturing companies.
1. Choose Your Overarching Topic
First, decide what your pillar page is about.
It has to be one of the services you actually sell, with enough scope for comprehensive content. Laser cutting, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, steel structures or powder coating all qualify; “our company” does not.
Use a keyword research tool such as Ahrefs or Semrush to validate the topic with search volumes, in every market and language you sell to. A German job shop will find that “Blechbearbeitung” (sheet metal processing) has around 800 monthly searches in Germany, while the English “sheet metal fabrication” has about 150 there. The language your buyers use decides which term the pillar targets.

2. Map Out Your Cluster Content for Structure
Once you have your topic, start thinking about subtopics.
Remember: the pillar page is where you link to your clusters from. If you plan the clusters before you write the pillar, you know exactly what to reference in it, and the structure of the pillar page will mirror the clusters it links to.
How do you come up with cluster ideas?
Type your topic into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions. For “powder coating” you will typically get “powder coating aluminium”, “powder coating vs painting”, “powder coating durability” and “powder coating cost”.
Next, run the search and note the questions in the “People also ask” box: “How long does powder coating last?”, “Can you powder coat over rust?”, “What is the maximum size for powder coating?”
Finish with the related searches at the bottom of the results page.
You will end up with a solid list of terms related to your process, and the best part is that every one of them is something people actually search for.
Drop them into a spreadsheet, remove duplicates and group similar terms. What remains is a set of subtopics that become your cluster article titles and the sections of your pillar page.
3. Write Your Pillar Page Content
With the structure fixed, it is time to write.
A pillar page is a broad overview of the whole topic. Some readers will be purchasing managers who are not engineers, so explain the process clearly and do not lean on unexplained abbreviations. The depth goes into the cluster pages.
While writing, keep your target buyer in mind. Think about:
- Who you are writing for: the design engineer, the buyer, or both
- What you are covering: the process, its limits, its options
- Why it matters to them: cost, lead time, quality, risk
- How it helps them decide: specifications, examples, a clear next step
Use real numbers from your own production wherever you can. The more useful the pillar page is, the more likely the reader is to continue into the cluster content and, eventually, to the RFQ form.
4. Use Subheadings to Break Up the Pillar Page
Subheadings are essential for long content.
They let people skim, which matters because most web users scan a page rather than read it word by word. Engineers looking for one number do this more than anyone.
Subheadings have SEO benefits too. Heading tags help search engines understand the content of the page and identify its key sections; it is part of how they assess a page and decide where to rank it.
Use the appropriate heading levels and make them descriptive: “Maximum sheet thickness by material” tells the reader and Google far more than “Our capabilities”.
5. Make the Page Easy to Navigate
A pillar page deserves care in its design.
Its main purpose is to provide a wealth of accurate information, but it should also be well designed and pleasant to use. Those two things convince readers to stay, which shows Google the page deserves its rankings.
A good manufacturing pillar page has a table of contents that follows the reader down the page, a clear section for every subtopic, tables for materials and thicknesses, photos of real parts instead of stock images, and a “Request a quote” button that stays visible as you scroll.
The table of contents is especially helpful on mobile, where a 3,000-word page would otherwise mean endless scrolling with a thumb.

6. Add a Conversion Path: RFQ Form and Lead Magnet
Your pillar pages will often be the pages with the most traffic on your site, because they target the broad, high-volume terms.
Once you have those visitors on the page, do not let them leave without a next step.
For a manufacturer, the primary conversion is the RFQ: a short form with a drawing upload, placed both in the section where the reader has enough information to decide and at the end of the page.
For engineers who are not ready to send drawings yet, offer a lead magnet in exchange for an email address:
- A design-for-manufacturing guide for your process (PDF)
- A tolerance or material thickness table they can keep on their desk
- A cost-driver checklist for quoting
- A printable PDF version of the pillar page itself
Someone who downloads your sheet metal design guide is telling you they design sheet metal parts. That is a lead worth nurturing until the next project comes up.
7. Add the Internal Links
Before you publish, make sure the internal links to and from the cluster topics are in place. This is how readers and search engines find the deeper dives.
Link naturally within the text whenever you mention a cluster topic, using that page’s primary keyword as the anchor text. You will need internal links for two types of content:
- Existing content: run a site search for your topic and see which existing pages can serve as clusters for the new pillar. Edit them to link to it. It is an easy way to send authority to a brand-new page.
- Content published after the pillar goes live: keep a list of your pillar pages. Each time you publish a new article, decide which cluster it belongs to, link to the pillar from it, and edit the pillar to point readers to the new article.
A pillar page makes both kinds of content easier to find, for buyers and for Google.
